Beyond the Visual
overview
I worked with Newcastle-based studio Sail Creative to design the graphics for Henry Moore Institute’s Beyond the Visual, the UK’s first major sculpture exhibition led by blind and partially blind artists.
The exhibition challenges the dominance of sight in how we make and experience art, incorporating touch, sound, smell, and movement to invite visitors to encounter sculpture in ways that reach far beyond the visual.
challenge
Sail developed the bold visual identity with accessibility at its core, prioritising the needs of a visually impaired audience through a typeface crafted for high legibility and a small, high-contrast colour palette to improve clarity and visibility. Translating this into a cohesive experience across the many touchpoints of the exhibition presented a unique challenge.
solution
Flat graphics, minimal layouts with ample negative space, large typography, and structural forms referencing sculptural art and braille come together to create an engaging, intuitive and accessible experience for visitors, fully aligned with the exhibition’s identity.
